Food, Products and Labeling

  • What is raw?

To be classified as raw, a food must not be heated over 37 degrees Celsius . This ensures that the natural enzymes, vitamins and minerals will not be damaged and the optimal quality is retained.

  • What is freeze dried?

Freeze drying is rapidly freezing food then removing the moisture. It is favoured as it has minimal impact on the nutrient quality, with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fibre and amino acids and other elements all remaining intact throughout the freeze drying process.

  • What are activated nuts?

Activated nuts have been soaked in water and salt for a period of time, this begins the germination and sprouting process which increases the overall nutrient value of the nuts. The process also removes hard to digest enzymes and allows your body to absorb more of the nuts nutrients.  After being soaked the nuts are then dehydrated at a low temperature to ensure they retain their goodness only to be reactivated when put in your mouth.

  • What is low GI and high GI?

The GI of a food is how it affects your blood sugar levels – foods with a high GI cause your blood sugar levels to quickly rise – and then, quickly fall. This is also known as a ‘sugar hit’. Low GI foods cause your body to have sustained, long lasting energy.

  • What is certified food?

This is means a third party has inspected the methods of growing and handling by the farm or manufacturer and has been assured it involves no use of forbidden additives. Samples are often requested to verify that there is no trace of contamination of the chemicals the product claims not to have. Examples of trusted certifications are United States Department of Agriculture – USDA Certified, Australian Organic Certified (AOC) and The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness – Certified Gluten Free (GF).

  • What is fair trade?

Fairtrade is a method of trade as an alternative to conventional farming. It is a movement based on fairness between producers, usually in developing nations. For the farmers, it provides improved terms of trade, working conditions and minimum fair prices in the face of fluctuating world market prices. In developing nations, Fairtrade is important for the security of long term contracts, investment in the local community and to gain support and skills necessary to operate in the global economy. Fair trade prevents exploitation of developing nations, reduces forced child labour and promotes higher social and environmental standards.

  • What is biodynamic?

Similar to organic farming, biodynamic is all natural farming, free from artificial chemicals, synthetic fertilisers and additives. However, the ‘biodynamic’ is more than just a farming method: it’s a holistic approach to lifestyle itself. Rather than separate farming from other processes, the biodynamic approach appreciates the interconnectedness of nature, animals, people and farming. Highlighting its spiritual, biological and material elements, the methods used in biodynamic farming aim to promote the health, sustainability and fertility of the soil and crops, which also enhances the ecosystems biodiversity.

In order to provide soil with natural goodness, compost is fermented and combined with specially selected naturopathic herbs such as chamomile, silica, stinging nettle and oak bark, which aim to improve the utilization of the sun, photosynthesis and the moon to develop the soil itself. Further, the livestock living on biodynamic farms have been carefully selected to ensure they complement the farming ecosystem, which then maintains the health of all animals, plants and people based on the land.

  • What is GMO? GM? GE? Are they all the same?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism; GM is genetically modification; GE is genetically engineered. The process is GE or GM, the result is GMO!

GMO is a plant which has had its genetic make-up chemically altered, either by combining its genes with another plant, by chemical herbicides or pesticides. This is performed in a lab, and would not otherwise occur naturally.

  • Are GMO’s safe?

Given the newness of the GMO industry, long term affects are unclear – both for ourselves as individuals, the ecosystem and the environment. We are experimenting in creating organisms with unknown long-term results on our health – scary right! Although the intention is to produce superior crops, by using chemicals and synthetic ingredients foreign to our bodies, it could have consequences.

For the environment, it reduces the soil’s natural biodiversity of flora and fauna, could unintentionally damage other organisms in the farming environment and may lead to dangerous, harmful ‘super crops’ being created which are resistant to current culling techniques – which may ironically, destroy the crops themselves.

  • Are GMO’s labeled?

Unfortunately, most foods which are created using GM ingredients such as canola oil and corn syrup are not required to be labeled as such. This is because the end product is highly refined – however, it still means that the product itself is GM.

  • How can I avoid GMO’s?

Simple, buy organic!

Organics

  • Why organic food?

Organic produce is grown free of artificial fertilisers and pesticides, it nurtures our planet’s soil and promotes beautiful, diverse flora and fauna. On average organic produce contains more vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients than conventionally farmed produce. It also contains no nitrates, genetically modified materials or harmful chemical pesticides. It is now becoming more important than ever to eat organic produce in order to sustain a healthy living environment.

  • How is a food classed as organic?

The final product must contain a minimum of 95% organic ingredients. Organic ingredients are those grown on a farm without the use of artificial ingredients, herbicides, pesticides, sewage sludge, genetic engineering, synthetic fertilisers and growth hormones.

  • What is ‘made with organic ingredients?’

It is a food that contains minimum 70% organic ingredients: as mentioned above, those grown without the use of artificial ingredients, herbicides, pesticides, sewage sludge, genetic engineering, synthetic fertilisers and growth hormones.

  • What if it has ‘organic’ in the brand name?

This is simply branding – there is no law against companies placing organic in their name, nor does it mean it has to be genuinely organically produced. Be careful here!

  • Does organic food have more nutrients than non-organic food?

Although there is controversy in this area, there have been numerous studies to demonstrate that the nutrients in organic food are greater and of a higher quality, than those found in non-organic food.  Specifically, a five year study in 2004-2009 in the European Union reported that in organic foods: vitamin C levels are shown to be up to 90% higher, protein was 12.7% higher, beta-carotene 53% higher and flavonoids 38% higher. A large factor of this is soil quality – this partially determines the crop. Given that soil quality itself is improved by organic farming, then it is clear that the choice is definitely organic when selecting!

  • Is organic farming better for the environment?

Organic farming requires greater soil quality to ensure fertility – so methods such as rotating crops and inter-cropping are used. This promotes the soils natural fauna and flora, which then improves overall quality. What’s more, this provides a healthy habitat for many species - which leads to greater biodiversity and a healthier gene pool. By comparison, non-organic farming is able to disregard the impact to the environment by prioritizing the yield of the crop. Overall, organic farming leads to enhanced sustainability of soil, the natural environment and our ecosystems.

  • How does organic farming affect pollution?

When synthetic fertilisers and other artificial additives are used in farming, it pollutes groundwater. In addition, In order to produce and transport these chemicals, significant carbon emissions are made, contributing to greenhouse gases. Organic farming practices increase the retention of carbon to the soil, which assists in the reduction of greenhouse gases.

  • Why is organic food more expensive?

Long term, no; short term, yes. In dollar value when you purchase, you may notice costs are higher. The cost of production is similar to conventional farming, however the volume of food produced is much smaller – which leads to by scale, an increased cost per unit. Costs can also be increased to ensure the protection against contamination from conventionally grown produce. However, given the dangers to health that eating non organic food produces, which would lead to illness, loss of healthy life and working capabilities, as well as the environmental cost, it can be argued that in essence, organic food in the long term is cheaper.

  • What is the dirty dozen / clean 15?

Every few years the Environmental Working Group (EWG) identifies foods with the greatest contamination, beginning at the top of the list, from pesticide residues: this forms the dirty dozen. By contrast, the clean fifteen is a list of foods found to have the least pesticides, again, with the fewest at the top.

Skin care

  • Why choose organic skin care products free from artificial ingredients and fragrances?

The skin is the largest organ in the body – anything on the skin’s surface will make its way through the cells, into your bloodstream and internal environment! Just like you don’t want toxic chemicals inside your body, your skin doesn’t want them either! Many people find that when they stop using synthetic ingredients in their skin care product, allergies in their system, and irritations to the skin, will clear up.

  • What is a Paraben?

Parabens are chemicals used to prevent the growth of microorganisms in cosmetic products. They have been linked with skin irritation, endocrine disruption, and the growth of breast cancer and reproductive issues. Parabens are legal and the research into these links is new and still under controversy. However, given they are used to kill bacteria is water based solutions, and our bodies are 70% comprised of water, they are somewhat toxic to our cells.

  • What is SLS?

Sodium lauryl sulphate is an artificial chemical used as a foaming agent and detergent in cosmetics. Although it is ‘classified’ as safe, a review was performed of 16,000 studies and verified that it has causal links to hormonal disruption, skin irritation, neurotoxicity and developmental toxicity.

Another important factor is that the classification of ‘safe’ for an individual product – it does not appreciate that often several products are collectively used –shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, body wash – all of which contain SLS, leading to greater exposure which is more harmful to our health.

  • What is Petroleum?

It is a mineral oil used to synthetically prevent chapping and dryness; however, it actually causes the body’s own natural moisturizing processes to be disrupted – therefore causing more dryness itself!

  • Is alcohol dangerous in skin care?

Alcohol in skin care makes a product on the skin feel weightless, as well as having a pleasant drying effect – so that’s good right? Well, not really! What alcohol does is help other ingredients in skin care penetrate the skin with greater ease – however, it does this by breaking down the skin’s natural barrier – destroying what keeps your skin healthy long term. In addition, alcohol destroys the cells that reduce inflammation, increases free radicals, which lead to aging, and also leads to increased oil production by the pores.

HOWEVER! There are ‘good alcohols’ which are not damaging to your skin at all. For example fatty alcohols such as cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are used as thickeners in products and will not harm your skin. If you’re unsure if a product contains a good or bad alcohol, it’s probably best to steer clear to be on the safe side.

  • I am vegan – how can I be sure that the skin care products don’t have any animal products?

We carry many products which are appropriate for those with health and diet specifications, we source products that are certified in many specialties including organic, raw, vegan, vegetarian, preservative free, kosher and gluten free to name a few.

Each product we have online has had its ingredients and manufacturing systems carefully examined to be true to its certification, under the ‘ingredients’ tab on each product you will not only find a detailed list of what is in each product but also a list of the health and diet specifications the product is suitable for.

Both Elie and Dr Talia are vegan, Dr Talia is qualified in Herbal Medicine and is studying Herbal Medicine for animals, she is an animal lover and has a vast amount of experience and knowledge towards the vegan products available in today’s market.
